Are Luffy and Ace Blood-Related? (& How?)

One of the best stories of One Piece is that of Luffy and Portgas D. Ace. It is also one of the saddest stories in the series. The friendship and bond that formed between the two adoptive brothers became a true one over the years and with its tragic ending, a beautiful story actually came to a very grim ending. But, moving that aside for now, in this article, we are actually going to tell you whether Luffy and Ace were related by blood, i.e., what was the actual nature of their relationship.

Portgas D. Ace and Monkey D. Luffy aren’t actually related by blood. They are sworn brothers, along with Sabo, but they are also adoptive brothers, in a way. Namely, Ace was the son of Gol D. Roger and before his execution, the latter asked Monkey D: Garp, Luffy’s grandfather, to adopt Ace, which he did, so Ace became a member of Luffy’s family. They’re technically not brothers, but adoptive uncle and nephew, but that’s just nitpicking it now.

The rest of this article is going to focus on both Portgas D. Ace and Monkey D. Luffy. You’re going to find out their shared stories, how they are related and what the very nature of their friendship and brotherhood was. Be careful, though, as there are going to be several spoilers in this article, and we just had to warn you.

Are Luffy and Ace related by blood?

Ace was born on Baterilla Island in South Blue 15 months after the death of his father, Gol D. Roger. His mother, Portgas D. Rouge, gives birth to him after 20 months of pregnancy to save him from the World Government and the Navy who were looking for Roger’s eventual child to execute him. His mother named him “Gol D. Ace” and died of exhaustion.

He took his mother’s name in tribute to her sacrifice. Garp, having witnessed his birth, brought him with him and cared for him as he had promised Roger 15 months earlier. By the time Luffy came into his life returning to the Mountain Bandit family, Ace had been trying to get rid of Luffy for about 6 months. At first, when he saw Luffy, he spat on him and Luffy got angry.

But later, Luffy finally forgave Ace and wanted to become his friend. Luffy discovered Sabo and Ace’s secret; their treasure to buy a pirate ship. The young boy was then caught by Porchemy and his men and tortured. Ace and Sabo then arrived to rescue him, nursed him back to health, and realizing he wanted more than anything to be friends with them, accepted him into the group.

They spend their days training and then one day, Ace stole a bottle of sake from Dadan and revealed to the other two boys that if they share a glass of alcohol, they will become brothers, no matter what they do in the house. life. Later, the trio drove into town and went to a restaurant. After their meal, they left without paying, and during their escape, they met Outlook III, who seems to know Sabo.

Back in their lair, Ace and Luffy question Sabo, and the latter reveals that he is not an orphan as he said, but the son of a noble. This does not change the relationship between the boys, and the three remain sworn brothers until Ace’s subsequent death, and despite Sabo’s apparent death.

What is the relationship between Ace and Luffy?

Ace and his adopted brother, Luffy, were very close as children and remained as pirates even after more than three years apart. As a child, Ace was initially on his own, hostile towards Luffy and angry when Luffy cried. But later became protective of him, especially from Garp, even insulting his grandfather in an attempt to protect Luffy. This defensive trait remained later on.

Ace was the first to intervene to protect Luffy from Smoker in Nanohana. Even while dying, he continued to protect Luffy – asking Jinbei at Impel Down to look after Luffy if he dies. Later, when he discovered that Blackbeard wanted to kill Luffy and hand him over to the world government, Ace immediately warned him that he would not let him capture his little brother.

Despite their closeness, Luffy often made Ace angry and worried by doing reckless things. Because of this, Ace didn’t doubt Hancock’s words when she informed him that Luffy had infiltrated Impel Down to rescue him. Although Ace often worried about Luffy’s recklessness, he was proud of his brother’s past exploits at heart, and in the anime, he was shown smiling slightly, listening to Garp in prison talking about Luffy’s actions on Enies Lobby and Sabaody.

Ace and Luffy Fighting Against Marine Officers

Apparently, Ace often shared his stories of Luffy with other allies of the Whitebeard Pirates (including the Shichibukai Jinbei). He was overjoyed to learn that Luffy had received his first bounty and wasted no time showing it to Whitebeard. Therefore, after Luffy’s unexpected appearance on the Marineford battlefield, Marco easily recognized Ace’s brother.

Ace had a habit of acting out the typical behavior of a good older brother, such as asking Luffy’s friends to look after his younger brother. He also gave Luffy part of his Vivre Card so that they could definitely find each other. They respected each other’s choices despite their differences and notions, arguing that the other was strong enough to take care of himself.

True, as Ace himself stated, he would never stop worrying about Luffy, because he is his older brother. Luffy believed that if he was worried about Ace and rushed to his rescue, Ace’s pride would not allow him to be saved. Thus, he initially left him alone even after discovering that Ace’s Vivre Card had begun to smolder.

However, when he learned that Ace had been captured and sentenced to death and saw that Ace’s Vivre Card had almost completely burned down, Luffy, determined to save his brother, put aside all his affairs, such as returning to the Sabaody Archipelago to reunite with his associates. During Ace’s execution, it was revealed that Ace was actually Gol D. Roger’s son, not, as previously believed, Monkey D. Dragon’s, and that he was raised by Garp from birth.

Therefore, Ace and Luffy are named, not blood brothers, since they have no blood ties. A flashback shows Luffy and Ace when they first met as young children, meaning that Luffy is aware of this fact. It also reveals that Luffy, with his distinctive straw hat and scar under his eye, met Ace after meeting Shanks and leaving the island.

Later, in a flashback, they officially identified themselves as brothers after drinking sake. In a conversation with Ivankov, Luffy also reveals his knowledge of Ace’s true father. Although the Whitebeard Pirates and Luffy invaded Marineford to save him, Ace gave his life to save Luffy. He was fully aware that he would be burned by Akainu’s strike, but did not hesitate to shield Luffy from the killing blow.

Ace’s only regret was that he would not live to see Luffy’s dream come true, which he thought would surely come true. Ace dies smiling as Luffy collapses into an abyss of despair over the death of his dear brother.
