Are Luffy and Ace Blood-Related? (& How?)

One of the best stories of One Piece is that of Luffy and Portgas D. Ace. It is also one of the saddest stories in the series. The friendship and bond that formed between the two adoptive brothers became a true one over the years and with its tragic ending, a beautiful story actually came to a very grim ending. But, moving that aside for now, in this article, we are actually going to tell you whether Luffy and Ace were related by blood, i.e., what was the actual nature of their relationship.

Portgas D. Ace and Monkey D. Luffy aren’t actually related by blood. They are sworn brothers, along with Sabo, but they are also adoptive brothers, in a way. Namely, Ace was the son of Gol D. Roger and before his execution, the latter asked Monkey D: Garp, Luffy’s grandfather, to adopt Ace, which he did, so Ace became a member of Luffy’s family. Ace” and died of exhaustion.

He took his mother’s name in tribute to her sacrifice. Garp, having witnessed his birth, brought him with him and cared for him as he had promised Roger 15 months earlier. By the time Luffy came into his life returning to the Mountain Bandit family, Ace had been trying to get rid of Luffy for about 6 months. Back in their lair, Ace and Luffy question Sabo, and the latter reveals that he is not an orphan as he said, but the son of a noble. This does not change the relationship between the boys, and the three remain sworn brothers until Ace’s subsequent death, and despite Sabo’s apparent death.

What is the relationship between Ace and Luffy?

Ace and his adopted brother, Luffy, were very close as children and remained as pirates even after more than three years apart. As a child, Ace was initially on his own, hostile towards Luffy and angry when Luffy cried. Therefore, Ace and Luffy are named, not blood brothers, since they have no blood ties. A flashback shows Luffy and Ace when they first met as young children, meaning that Luffy is aware of this fact. Later, in a flashback, they officially identified themselves as brothers after drinking sake. In a conversation with Ivankov, Luffy also reveals his knowledge of Ace’s true father. Although the Whitebeard Pirates and Luffy invaded Marineford to save him, Ace gave his life to save Luffy.
