How Many Brothers Does Luffy Have?

One of the best stories of One Piece is that of Luffy, Sabo, and Portgas D. Ace. It is also one of the saddest stories in the series. The friendship and bond that formed between the three “brothers” became a true one over the years, and with its tragic ending, a beautiful story actually came to a very grim ending. But, moving that aside for now, in this article, we are actually going to tell you about Luffy a bit and we are going to tell you whether the three of them are actually biological brothers, or was their “brotherhood” just a distinction that is unrelated to their families. In this article, in short, you are going to find out how many brothers Monkey D. Luffy has.

Biologically, Monkey D. Luffy does not have any siblings. As far as it is known, he is an only child with neither a brother nor a sister. But, due to his close friendship with Sabo and Ace, as well as the pact they have made as children, the three of them could be considered as “brothers”, but not as biological brothers. This would mean that Luffy has two brothers, but they are symbolic and not biological.

The rest of this article is going to explore Luffy’s relationship with Ace and Sabo while focusing, in particular, on the nature of their relationship and the symbolic value of their friendship. If you’re not fully up-to-date with the events of One Piece, this article might contain some important spoilers, but we have to state that no new information will be presented here, as we will focus on old and well-known facts about the three of them.

Luffy has no biological siblings, but Sabo and Ace can be considered to be his “brothers”

The relationship between Luffy, Sabo, and Ace is one of the most important ones in the whole series, which is why we need to tell you everything you need to know. When Luffy was placed in the care of Dadan by his grandfather Garp, Sabo and Ace were already best friends and had amassed greater treasure through minor and major thefts when Luffy spotted them at the edge of Gray Terminal.

The two kidnapped the youngster and tied him to a tree to kill him because it appeared he was getting in the way of their plan to become pirates with wealth. But since none of them had ever done anything like before, that proved to be more challenging than anticipated.

They also learned about Polchemy, a member of the Bluejam pirate gang who was Ace’s most recent victim. The two seek cover, but Luffy is discovered and taken hostage by the pirates because he lies about not knowing either Ace or Sabo.

Sabo discovered that Luffy had been tormented by Polchemy but hadn’t revealed anything until the two panicked and moved their loot to a new hiding place. Ace and Sabo were inspired by Luffy’s fortitude and loyalty, so they broke into Polchemy’s hideout, freed Luffy, and together they destroyed Polchemy. Bluejam then shot Polchemy to death because he lost the money Ace had stolen from him and lost to two kids.

The three of them immediately realized that Sabo was no longer secure in the Gray Terminal, so he checked in with Dadan as well. They hunted together as a group, prepared decent meals, and prepared themselves for the next time. Luffy continued to challenge the two but was defeated each time.

The three of them also traveled to the Goa kingdom’s capital, where they met up with a number of small-time criminals and dined in a few of the city’s eateries before cheating on the bill.

However, they unexpectedly run with Sabo’s father on the street, who recognized his son even though he had been missing from home for years. The two companions caught up with him later in the Colubo mountain’s forest, and he admitted to having misled them since he was actually an aristocrat who had fled his family rather than an orphan like the two of them.

Ace2C and Luffy Sworn Brothers

Sabo revealed to Ace and Luffy his dream: to tour the world and publish a book about it when they showed no interest. After hearing the other two relate their hopes, the three then toasted to their brotherhood. For the ensuing weeks, the three made the region hazardous while supporting one another whenever possible. They were welcomed in Foosha Village by the youthful and attractive Makino, who was well-liked by the mountain bandits.

In the interim, Garp also came in from the snow to properly spank them three times. A note stating that Ace, Sabo, and Luffy had left and were now living in a shelter in the jungle was eventually discovered by Dadan after some searching.

Living together was abruptly stopped when Sabo’s father went looking for him with the Bluejam pirates and threatened to kill Ace and Luffy so that his son would no longer need a reason to survive in the wilderness. Sabo, therefore, abandoned his aspirations and consented to return voluntarily if his father spared his buddies in order to protect his friends.

Back in town, Sabo sought to stop Ace and Luffy from being accused of being responsible for his abduction, but he was helpless against the corrupt system where Sabo’s father had no trouble pursuing his interests with a stack of dollars to pay for berries. When Sabo returned home, he discovered that his parents had adopted his younger brother, Sterry, as their heirs following the loss of their oldest son.

He ultimately found out that the aristocracy intended to set fire to the Gray Terminal along with all the waste and people to create a spotless cityscape for the Celestial Dragons, their upcoming guest. Despite his best efforts, Sabo was unable to save the Gray Terminal residents because of the city’s army. When Sabo encountered Dragon in the city’s streets, he told him that he had had enough of the appalling and inhumane conditions there. Dragon, who was wearing a cloak, heard Sabo’s comments with shock.

Later, Sabo enlisted in the Revolutionary Army under the command of Luffy’s father. Ace joined Whitebeard’s crew and passed away while defending Luffy from Akainu. As we all know, Luffy embarked on his own journey to ascend to the position of Pirate King. Sabo and Luffy would later cross paths again, but Ace’s untimely passing remains one of the most heartbreaking events in One Piece’s narrative.

And because Sabo and Ace had a thorough understanding of Luffy, they were considered when creating the scene. They are significant individuals in his life, and Oda intended this scenario to emphasize that.

As you can see, the relationship between the three of them was quite close, and they were the best of friends. Knowing what pacts mean to pirates, it is quite obvious that the fact that the three of them made actually meant that they considered each other brothers, regardless of their actual families. This is why this topic is so important from Luffy’s perspective and why this pact, and these three kids, are still one of the most important elements from the lore of One Piece.

Both Sabo and Ace come from completely different families than Luffy

Before we end this article, we just want to tell you about Luffy’s, Sabo’s, and Ace’s families so you’re not in doubt about the fact that they are not Luffy’s biological brothers.

Portgas D. Ace Young

Ace was born on Baterilla Island in South Blue 15 months after the death of his father, Gol D. Roger. His mother, Portgas D. Rouge, gives birth to him after 20 months of pregnancy to save him from the World Government and the Navy, who were looking for Roger’s eventual child to execute him.

His mother named him “Gol D. Ace,” and died of exhaustion. He took his mother’s name in tribute to her sacrifice. Garp, having witnessed his birth, brought him with him and cared for him as he had promised Roger 15 months earlier.

Luffy’s biological father is Monkey D. Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army, who was never present in Luffy’s life and left his son in the care of his own father, Luffy’s grandfather Monkey D. Garp, although he has been following his exploits throughout the series.

Sabo was born in the kingdom of Goa. He was actually born into a noble family to parents who wanted him to marry a girl belonging to the royal family to raise their own status, not caring about his opinion on the matter. Realizing this, Sabo ran away when he was around five years old, being presumed dead by his parents. He later met Ace, with whom he began stealing in the city and in the Gray Terminal, becoming the best of friends.
