4. Up and Vanished

100 Best True Crime Podcasts of All Time

Atlanta filmmaker Payne Lindsey of Tenderfoot TV originally envisioned Up and Vanished as a true-crime documentary. Lindsey selected a missing-person case from his home state, Georgia, and embarked on a journey as an amateur investigator. After starting his research and initial interviews, he decided to present the project in audio form as a podcast.

Season 1 of Up and Vanished explored the 2005 disappearance of beauty queen and high school teacher Tara Grinstead from her home in Ocilla, Georgia. The cold case was the largest case file in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s history, with no arrests in 11 years. The podcast quickly drew attention, both in South Georgia and nationwide. Reviewing old leads and uncovering new ones, Up and Vanished quickly expanded from a planned six-episode season to a final count of 24 episodes with numerous bonus episodes.

As the people of Ocilla began talking about the case again, new leads and stories emerged. In February 2017, the GBI arrested two suspects for Grinstead’s murder. Up and Vanished will continue to provide updates on this no-longer-cold case as the criminal trial proceeds in 2018. The second season of Up and Vanished, covering a completely different true crime story will debut on August 20, 2018.

And all they had to protect them was a system ill-equipped to stop the madness.

Parents demand more attention and effort from law enforcement, as racial tensions rise. There are no leads. There are no suspects. But there is pressure to close these cases and preserve Atlanta’s status as a thriving metropolis.

As the list of missing and murdered rises to more than 25, the “Atlanta Monster” is seized. 22 years old. Black. Wayne Williams. He is convicted only of two adult murders, but authorities close the majority of the child killings, attributing them to Williams. The city returns to business as usual for most, but did law enforcement get the right man? Questions still linger today. 60. Welcome to Your Fantasy

100 Best True Crime Podcasts of All Time

In the 1980s the “male exotic dancers” of Chippendales were everywhere: On beefcake calendars and daytime TV. Gyrating on stages across the world in their signature cuffs, collars, and spandex pants. Selling the promise of women’s liberation for the price of a few dollars in a g-string. But behind the powerful mullets, oiled pecs, and non-stop parties lies a much darker story.

This is the story of how two men—an immigrant from India and a children’s TV producer from New Jersey—transformed a seedy nightclub in Los Angeles into a global phenomenon, and how paranoia and greed turned Chippendales into a hotbed for drugs, corruption, and murder.

With over one hundred hours of archival footage, and sixty-plus interviews with investigators, co-conspirators, former dancers, and the women who loved them, historian Natalia Petrzela exposes one of the great, sordid, unexamined stories in American culture.

100 Best True Crime Podcasts of All Time

race Evidence is a true crime podcast that focuses on unsolved cases, from chilling murders to missing persons and the unexplained. Join host Steven Pacheco as he examines each case, diving deep into the evidence and exploring the theories which revolve around them. For each unsolved case, there are the victims and their families, who want answers, and the abductors and murderers who hide the truth.

This podcast has the goal of drawing attention to and relating the stories of the events and individuals involved in these unsolved crimes. To seek truth for the victims and their families.

Each episode examines the details of the case, which are ascertained through research and study. As much detail as can be dug up is shared and presented in a chronological format. Following a discussion of the case, there is a second segment that focuses on the known theories and their likelihood. The host often interjects his own theory, if he has one, or selects which theory he believes is most likely.

However, since the answers are not known, there is no attempt to deliver any particular theory as the definitive one. Any student of history knows that, in order to find the closest answer as to what truly happened in any particular event, you must examine all sides of it and the real details are likely an amalgamation of specific pieces from each side.

Trace Evidence examines well-known cases, as well as little-known cases. The podcast is open to suggestions and will look into any case recommended, especially if it is recent and time is of the essence.
