It is 1946 and Jackie Robinson is a Black league baseball player back who accepts a bold idea delivered to him by Branch Rickey who is the Major League team executive. He recruits Robinson as the first African American player to play in the Major League.

As assumed, this would be a great challenge for Robinson and his whole family who will have to stand racial comments, both from fans and players. Robinson will have to endure this enormous burden and will find hope and friends where he least expected. This excellent movie is a biographical drama with Chadwick Boseman who excelled as Jackie Robinson.

Trouble With the Curve (2012)

This is an interesting sports drama about a boy scout named Gus Lobel who is slowly approaching the end of his career but doesn’t want to stop. He convinces his team to allow him one more scouting job to prove that he still has it but he has to accept his daughter’s company since his health is deteriorating.

Instead of checking his eyes, he leaves for the job which takes him to North Carolina where he has to confront his daughter who wants to know why he estranged himself from her. While dealing with his personal issues, Gus meets Johnny, a scout from another team who was once an excellent player Gus scouted. 

Sugar (2008)

This movie shows us the struggle foreign players have when arriving in America to play in the major league. By 2008, more than 25 percent of major league players were born in Latin America and here we meet Miguel “Sugar” Santos who at the age of 19 moves from the Dominican Republic to the fictional town of Bridgetown, Iowa.

He had to leave his mother and girlfriend behind and has to adapt to this alien culture and new language. While trying to make it big he will have to go through numerous challenges and accept that he has to live with many disappointments in order to make it to the Majors and play in New York.

Billy Crystal, a famous actor, and a great New York Yankees fan directed this biographical drama about two brilliant and completely different baseball players who hit home runs at impressive rates. It is the story of Roger Maris, a quiet and reserved player, much less popular than his New York Yankee team member Mickey Mantle.

Mantle was at the beginning of the 1960s believed to be the one who would challenge Babe Ruth’s record of 60 home runs in one season but in the summer of 1961 Maris was the one who was ahead of Mantle, running for Ruth’s record.

Ferrel Takes the Field (2015)

This sports comedy documentary follows American comedian Will Ferrel who take the challenge in 2015 of playing all ten positions for 10 Major League Baseball teams. He managed to do it in one day, spending it as a player in MLB’s Arizona “Cactus League”.

It looked like a glorious day. 10 teams, 10 positions, and 10 uniforms, all in one day. It seemed that nothing could go wrong.

Babe Ruth (1998)

This is a very interesting and educative sports documentary about one of the greatest baseball players of all time, perhaps even the greatest that ever lived. Babe Ruth was a true perfection on the field but in his private life, he was also a man to mention.

This tv movie is a compilation of his home videos, rarely-seen footage, and interviews where many fans will learn things that not even the biggest and most devout among them knew. 

The Bad News Bears (1976)

Walter Matthau and Tatum O’Neal play leading roles in this lovely family sports drama about Morris Buttermaker, a former minor leaguer who is now working as a pool cleaner. He accepts the money to coach the Bears, a group of misfits with no talent for baseball whatsoever.

He is aware of his problems and decides to bring in the pitching ace Amanda Wurtlizter, the daughter of his former girlfriend, and Kelly Leak, the best player around. They are slowly beginning to show some prospect and soon start to gain confidence, ready to get in the game and play against their nemesis, the Yankees.

Cobb (1994)

Ty Cobb was a great baseball player but greatly despised for his attitude and behavior. Feeling misunderstood, he decides to show himself in a different light and asks Al Stump, a famous sports writer to write his official “autobiography”.

Even though Cobb wants him to present him as a nice and pleasant man, after spending some time with him, Stump realizes that Cobb is just like he has been always described, angry, violent and racist, and abusive to everyone. Stump will have to decide how to present him to the public so he writes one for him and one for the public.

The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977)

This is the sequel of the extremely successful movie The Bad News Bear we wrote about in this article where we follow the Bears who became the little league champions of California. They are invited to play an exhibition at the Houston Astrodome with the local champions, the Toros.

Kelly Leak, one of the Bears’ greatest assets comes back to the team and decides to travel with them to Houston, mainly to try and make amends with her estranged father, Mike.

Bad News Bears (2005)

This is the remake of the mentioned original from 1976, with an excellent cast, including Greg Kinnear, Marcia Gay Harden, and Billy Bob Thornton. Morris Buttermaker used to be a minor-league pitcher and now he is working as a professional exterminator.
