We are going to tell you some information about the history of the character, as well as his role in the whole story. We are also going to answer a series of relevant questions about Monkey D. Dragon.

Who is Monkey D. Dragon?

Dragon’s history remains mostly unknown, save for the fact that he was born in the Goa Kingdom. It is not known why exactly he left Luffy in the care of his grandfather Garp instead of taking care of him himself, though it was most likely to protect him. At some point, he created the Revolutionary Army becoming its leader and gaining more and more support over the years.

Ten years before the start of the plot of One Piece, Dragon returned home to the Goa Kingdom after hearing of the plan by the citizens to destroy Gray Terminal to give a better view to the World Nobles that would arrive in those days. After witnessing his own people’s pain through Sabo, Dragon enacts a “plan” to save the people and embarrass the government, which is to create a holocaust to allow the people of Junk Mountain to escape.

Due to his actions, the Nobles simply noted that the charred remains of his burning of the mountain were less than anticipated. Dragon saved Sabo, who had been attacked by a World Noble, sinking his ship and almost drowning him, by grabbing his hand and helping him out of the water by picking him up and carrying him to his ship so that he can be saved.

His fellow revolutionaries tended to his wounds, taking him to Baltigo with them. After Sabo recovered, he decided to join the revolutionaries, later becoming second-in-command. His first appearance was in Loguetown, where he saved his son, Luffy, from Navy Captain Smoker. At that moment a gust of wind hit Loguetown taking Luffy, Smoker, and Buggy the Clown away.

On Baltigo, Dragon was observing and pondering Luffy’s new bounty when one of his men wanted to tell him that Luffy was actually Garp’s grandson. However, Dragon interrupted him and he left the room. On the castle balcony, he commented that the true nature of the world will be answered and that he will meet Luffy again.

After Whitebeard’s death and the freeing of the slaves at Tequila Wolf, Dragon expressed his desire to see one of them – Nico Robin. Also after the Battle of Marineford, Dragon was asked by various revolutionaries if he really was Monkey D. Luffy’s father, just as the newspapers said. Dragon casually confirmed that fact, to the surprise of his subordinates.

Later, Dragon informs Ivankov that one day they will have to gather the revolutionary leaders scattered around the world. Dragon then tells Ivankov what has happened with Kuma. Two years later, Dragon was shocked by the demise of the Donquixote Pirates, as well as the destruction of the illegal arms trade, commenting that the World Government will not let that one simply slide.

Dragon Saves Sabo

Koala then tells him about the Iron Liquor Ore they found in many of the stolen weapons and demands that he summons all the leaders of the Revolutionary Army. As the news of what happened in Dressrosa with the Straw Hat Pirates spread around the world, in Baltigo, Dragon along with Koala and Sabo looked at their new reward posters.

Sometime later, a newspaper reported Blackbeard’s attack on Baltigo, the base of the revolutionaries. During the assault, the base was destroyed, however, the location of Dragon and the fate of the revolutionaries remained unknown. The Revolutionary Army managed to escape Baltigo’s destruction by moving their base to Momoiro Island. As they waited for the army commanders to arrive, Dragon spoke to Sabo to finish discussing the plan to declare war on the World Nobles during the Levely.

After the Levely, Dragon is seen with several revolutionaries reading some terrible news about Sabo. Given the general commotion, Dragon alleged to his subordinates the need to confirm the news for themselves. After breaking the news that Sabo was still alive, Dragon became angry, stating that if it was really him who killed King Nefertari Cobra he would not forgive him and asked Kuma if he saw what happened, but got no answer.

Is Monkey D. Dragon Luffy’s father?

Luffy is the son of Dragon. Like his own father, Garp, Dragon seems to expect a lot from Luffy. Although he has not yet introduced himself to Luffy personally, Dragon approves, or at least does not condemn, his son’s actions. He showed up in Loguetown to see Luffy go to the Grand Line and stopped Smoker from capturing his son. This incident shows that he cares about Luffy’s well-being, although he most likely did not participate in his upbringing. Even after the revolutionaries found out about their family ties, Dragon calmly confirmed it.

Is Monkey D. Dragon proud of Luffy?

The father seems to be very proud of his son because he has caused a lot of trouble for the World Government and looks forward to the day they meet face to face. His unusual habit of standing facing the East Blue (where he left Luffy) apparently means he misses his son. When he was informed of Luffy’s second invasion of Marineford, he decided to focus on his own goals as he felt Luffy was old enough to take care of himself.

He appears to be keeping up with the news of his son, as shown when Sabo informed him of Luffy’s progress after the Dressrosa incident. As news of the Straw Hat’s achievement on Dressrosa spread around the world, Dragon was seen looking at the new bounty poster from his son. He also kept up with news of Luffy’s exploits in Totto Land.

Is Monkey D. Dragon related to Gol D. Roger?

There is no direct relation between Roger and Dragon’s family. Roger did meet and was a temporary ally of Dragon’s grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, but the Monkey family is not directly related to Roger. Now, Roger did have a son, later on, Portgas D. Ace, who would become Luffy’s sworn brother, but their bond did not establish a direct blood relation between the families. Also, some suspect that the D. in their names is a sign of relation, but that has yet to be proven, as we are going to explain later. As far as things stand now, Dragon and Roger could be somehow connected via the Will of D., but not directly related.

How powerful is Monkey D. Dragon?

Monkey D. Dragon is the leader of the Revolutionary Army and has complete command of the organization. It has been hinted that Dragon may be an incredibly powerful person, the World Government has dubbed him the “world’s most wanted man” and greatly feared the possibility of him rebelling against them along with Whitebeard, who became a powerful threat in his own right, as well as being the son of the legendary marine Garp and father of Luffy, a notorious pirate.

A proof of his great power is that he trained Sabo, the second in command in the revolutionaries, who as a child was already a strong fighter, achieving with his training that years later Sabo was able to be at the same level as Fujitora, admiral of the Navy Headquarters.

When Sengoku told everyone about his relationship with Luffy, most of the people were stunned, including Gecko Moria, then a member of the Seven Warlords, and members of the Whitebeard Pirates, very powerful people under the orders of Whitebeard, the most powerful pirate. This reputation was enough for Luffy to be marked as a potential threat in the future.

He has powerful subordinates like his commander Emporio Ivankov and Inazuma, who are comparatively inferior in rank, apart from his second-in- command- Sabo, who was able to fight only Burgess and Diamante, who worked as commanders for other fearsome pirates, before eating the Mera Mera no Mi, which greatly increased his power, bringing his boss’s power to a level similar to that of an Emperor.

Ivankov comments on Luffy’s willpower to live and his outsized power and that it is just helping to prove the idea that he is indeed Dragon’s son, implying that Dragon has similar willpower. When Dragon arrived in Goa, the people noticed that there was extra wind that day, similar to the time it didn’t snow for a whole day on Drum Island due to the presence of Portgas D. Ace. It is also notable to note that every time (apart from the Revolutionary Army headquarters) that has appeared a storm arrives or is already there.

Does Monkey D. Dragon have a Devil Fruit?

As far as it is known at this moment, Monkey D. Dragon does not have a Devil Fruit; Oda hasn’t revealed any Devil Fruit-related powers that Dragon might possess. There is some speculation online that he might have eaten a weather-related Devil Fruit, which is evidenced by storms appearing wherever he shows up, but this is only speculation at this moment and we’ll just have to wait and see what Oda says about it.

He maintains an unwavering seriousness when he speaks of his crusade, warning his subordinates that the conflict against the World Government would be wide and extensive.
