Out of all the Straw Hat Pirates crew members in One Piece, Usopp is known as the comical relief and by far its most cowardly member. Now, while Usopp’s cowardice might not be a reflection of his true powers, we certainly did not see much of the latter because of the former. That is why we have ventured on a journey to discover how strong Usopp is in our earlier articles, and this one is actually going to be a continuation of the articles exploring Usopp’s powers and abilities. In this article, you are going to find out whether Usopp has eaten a Devil Fruit in the One Piece manga and anime series.

Usopp has not eaten a Devil Fruit in One Piece. He is one of a smaller number of characters in the series who have achieved fame despite not having special Devil Fruit powers. Although Usopp is not one of the series’ strongest characters, everything that he has done so far is actually the result of his own training. Still, in a fan Q&A, Oda revealed that if Usopp were to have consumed a Devil Fruit, it would have been the comical Poke Poke no Mi.

The rest of this article is going to be focused on the character of Usopp in One Piece. We are going to tell you whether Usopp has eaten a Devil Fruit or not, as well as some general notions about his powers and abilities. This article might contain a smaller number of spoilers, so do be careful while you’re reading.

Will Usopp ever eat a Devil Fruit?

Usopp is the Sharpshooter of the Straw Hat Pirates and one of the weakest and most cowardly members in comparison. Oda wishes to make him the weakest of the crew permanently to keep a balance in the story and because Usopp is the crew member closest to a normal human being. Since the beginning of the series, he is inferior in power and strength to the other characters and needs his weapons for strength. Based on this, you can probably deduce that Usopp has not eaten a Devil Fruit, and you’re right – Usopp has not eaten one in the series. But will he?

The fact that Usopp has not eaten a Devil Fruit makes him part of a small number of relevant characters who have achieved fame and popularity in the world of pirates without having eaten a Devil Fruit. Okay, sure, Usopp is not one of the most feared characters in the series, but regardless of that fact, he has become a formidable foe, as recent events have shown. All of this is a direct result of his training and his work, which is why it is even better.

As for the future, we highly doubt that Oda will see Usopp eat a Devil Fruit. It wouldn’t make much sense from a development point of view, and it’s kind of too late now. It might happen accidentally, but we don’t think Oda will go there. It just wouldn’t make much sense. Plus, Oda has already told us what Usopp’s Devil Fruit would be, implying that it will actually never happen.

Namely, while Usopp hasn’t really consumed a Devil Fruit, author Eiichiro Oda has revealed, in the SBS (a fan Q&A section) of Volume 98, what would’ve happened had Usopp consumed a Devil Fruit. Here is the whole transcript:

D: If Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, and Franky were to become ability users, then what kind of fruit do you think they would have eaten? -P.N. 420-land

O: I see, that’s quite a fun question~. Hmmm… what I would like to see is… Zoro: Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu (Fish Fish Fruit, Mythical Type Model: Seiryuu) Nami: Goro Goro no Mi (Rumble Rumble Fruit) (lightning human) Usopp: Poke Poke no Mi (Pocket Pocket Fruit) (infinite pockets in one’s body) Sanji: Sui Sui no Mi (Swim Swim Fruit) Franky: Buki Buki no Mi (Arms Arms Fruit)

Zoro: I’d want the sword to turn into a dragon rather than Zoro. I think that would be insanely cool. Nami: A true weather lady, now no one can stop her anymore (apart from Luffy). Usopp: The perfect pocket for someone like Usopp who always has something up his sleeve. Sanji: It allows one to slip through walls or swim on the ground. If given to Sanji, it would become quite the nasty ability. Franky: Can’t get any better than this for an ability for Franky.

What are Usopp’s powers and abilities?

Now that we have cleared this up, let us see what Usopp managed to do without any Devil Fruit powers. Usopp does not have superhuman abilities like Luffy or Sanji. Before the time skip, he used the bluff to hide the fact that he could only lift 5 kg at best, being, with Nami, one of the weakest members without any fighting technique; the duo often improvised with the means at hand during fights. After the time skip, however, he is strong enough to be able to hold Luffy and Robin in freezing water without sinking.

Usopp, along with Sanji, has been one of Luffy’s crew’s most tactically adept members, partly due to his lack of courage. Even if they are stronger than him, he may blatantly lie with enough confidence to frighten certain gullible individuals. He frequently employs these skills to have a fighting strategy that works. Usopp confronts Smack and tosses a bottle of wine at him, which he catches, setting him on fire so he can kill him with a hammer later.

His marksmanship skills have also improved over time, as well as his Haki usage, but these things have not been detailed in the story but were shown and explored over time, so we don’t really have anything to pinpoint here. Usopp simply became stronger and better over time as far as these skills are concerned. In that aspect, the time skip was truly crucial for him, as Usopp not only became a more courageous person and a better fighter, but he also became more skilled and more powerful.
