The movie Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film directed, written, produced, and co-edited by James Cameron, and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver. The film is set in the mid-22nd century when humans are colonizing Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system, in order to mine the mineral unobtanium, a coveted energy source that can be used to power whole planets. The making of the movie Avatar was a technological milestone. The special effects and 3D motion capture used in the movie were innovative and had never been seen before in any other movie. This allowed the movie to have a very realistic look, which made it all the more immersive for viewers. So, this raises a question, how long did it take to make Avatar? And will there be sequels?

The movie Avatar was in development for four years before it was released, and it took a total of eight years to make from start to finish. This is because the movie was almost entirely CGI and required a lot of special effects and motion capture. Therefore, it took a significant amount of time to create all the necessary content for the movie. The second installment to the Avatar franchise will hit theaters on December 16, 2022.

The long-term making of Avatar was well worth the wait, as Avatar went on to become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time at the global box office with $2.84 billion. We can’t wait to see more of Pandora and the amazing world that James Cameron created in the upcoming sequels.

The making of Avatar

The making of the movie Avatar took eight years in total from start to finish. That is because the technology used in the movie was very innovative and required a lot of time to create. The special effects and 3D motion capture used in the movie were unlike anything that had been seen before in any other movie, and this made the movie very realistic.

The CGI used in Avatar was so realistic that it won 3 Academy Awards. Avatar won the 82nd Academy Awards for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects, and was nominated for a total of nine, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Director and producer of the movie, James Cameron said that he wanted to make a movie that would change the way people watch movies, and he certainly achieved that with Avatar. The movie was an epic science fiction film that was unlike anything that had been seen before, and it broke box office records worldwide.

Cameron also says that Avatar is a ‘message movie’ about the importance of living in harmony with nature. And that is something that we can all learn from.

Na’vi language

Besides being a CGI masterpiece, Avatar is also specific because of the made-up language used amongst the habitants of Pandora. The made-up language in the movie Avatar, called Na’vi, was created by Paul Frommer, a linguist at USC, and he based the language on various languages, including Tibetan and Hindi.

The creation of a basic language structure took Paul months and then he had to work with the actors to help them learn the language. Sigourney Weaver, who played Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar, said that learning the Na’vi language was very difficult but it was also a lot of fun.

It’s been over a decade since Avatar broke the box office, so we can’t wait to see what will the sequels bring. But when will that be exactly?

How Many Sequels Will Avatar Have?

Besides Avatar: The Way Of Water, other sequels that are planned are Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa. There are no official release dates yet for these three sequels.

What we do know so far is that scenes for the third movie were shot simultaneously with the second movie. This is what James Cameron had to say about that:

”The third film still needs to be fine-tuned. It is too long. We shot the second and third movies together, based on the type of scenes and environments they share. I see these films as a six hour miniseries. We filmed all of the Avatar 2 and 3 scenes simultaneously.”

James Cameron

Cameron also said that some of the scenes for Avatar 4 had been shot as he was worried that young actors would become too old and there would be too much of an age gap if he didn’t do so.

So there you have it, everything we know so far about the upcoming Avatar sequels. We can’t wait to see what James Cameron has in store for us next. Stay tuned for more updates!
