Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune is definitely one of the best book adaptations in history. Even if you don’t like the movie, you can’t deny how well it was adapted. The only problem, it definitely means nothing without the sequel! Thankfully, Warner has approved the sequel, but we will have to wait around two years for it. Until then, we have exactly what you need to reduce the waiting time, and that would be the list of the best movies like Dune.

Dune is exactly what we mean by the term space opera, so movies on this list will try to follow the same formula. Big effects, huge worlds, and stories, full of amazing characters. So let’s check them out.

Best movies like Dune 2021

Some movies in this list just won’t be able to be put as a solo movie, so we will list them as complete franchises, the best example would probably be Star Wars. So, there will actually be more than 30 amazing movies like Dune.

Star Wars franchise

Star Wars is epic space opera created by producer and director George Lucas. The franchise’s first film, released by 20th Century Fox on May 25, 1977, became a worldwide popular culture phenomenon and was followed at two-year intervals by two sequels. Sixteen years after the last film of the first trilogy, the first film of the new prequel trilogy was released, with two accompanying films also at three-year intervals, with the last in distribution on May 19, 2005.

In 2012, Disney bought Star Wars for $4 billion. In December 2015, starts the first part of the new so-called sequel trilogy, Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, and in December 2017, Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi was shown in theaters. The latest sequel to the Star Wars: Episode IX sequel was released in 2019 under the direction of J. J. Abrams.

Certainly, everybody knows about Star Wars movies, but we just have to put them on the list, because the Star Wars universe is one of the rare that can compare with Dune in its epic size and world-building.

Los Angeles, 2019. The city is overcrowded and dirty. On other planets, colonies of so-called “replicants,” androids created by the Tyrell Corporation to the image and opportunity of the people. Replicants develop their own feelings over time so they are programmed to live only 4 years. They are stronger than humans so they are implanted with false childhood memories to live in the delusion that they are real people.

Replicants are not allowed to come to Earth, and a special police organization “Blade Runner” is in charge of liquidating the offenders. Rick Deckard of Blade Runner is given the task of liquidating several of them who came to Earth and killed several people, led by Roy Batty.

The problems begin when Rick falls in love with the replicant Rachael and begins to doubt the justification of the mission.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new fighter, Los Angeles police officer K finds a long-hidden secret that has the potential of what little human society is left to throw into complete chaos. His discovery will take him in search of Rick Deckard, a former exterminator who disappeared three decades ago.

Blade Runner movies are different than Dune in terms of world-building. They are mostly set on Earth in a dystopian future and not on distant planets. Still, they are some of the best epic Sci-fi movies you just need to watch if you haven’t.

Stalker (1979)

Based on the Strugacki brothers’ novel “Picnic by the Roadside”, the film is about two men, the Writer (A. Solonitsyn) and the Professor (N. Grinko) who, led by the mysterious Stalker (A. Kaidanovsky), travel to an area known as the Zone where the room supposedly fulfills all desires.

Each of them has their own reasons why they want to get to the Room; The writer there wants to find inspiration while the Professor wants to win the Nobel Prize. Stalker reveals to them that the past person who arrived at the Room gained a lot of money as she wished, but hung himself because the Room not only fulfills the expressed wishes, but also the subconscious ones.

Just like Dune, Stalker is set in the distant future and is leading its characters through hostile territory full of symbolism.

Alien movie franchise

Alien is a sci-fi horror/action franchise mostly following officer Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and her battles with an extraterrestrial lifeform, commonly referred to as “the Alien” or Xenomorph.

Movies are produced and distributed by 20th Century Studios. The series began with Alien (1979), directed by Ridley Scott, and was followed by three sequels: Aliens (1986), directed by James Cameron; Alien 3 (1992), directed by David Fincher, and Alien Resurrection (1997), directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Scott also directed a prequel series, composed of Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), which follows the exploits of the David 8 android and the creators of the eponymous creatures referred to as the “Engineers”.

The series has led to numerous novels, comics, video games and television series. It has inspired a number of spin-offs – most notably the Alien vs. Predator series, which combines the continuities of the Alien franchise with the Predator franchise and consists of two films as well as various series of comics, books, and video games.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

It is characterized by arguably the largest ellipse in the history of cinema – a cut that skips 3 million years – from the femur of a human-ape finding its first weapon in it to a spaceship in free flight through space. The very end of the film, many genre historians believe, is where the human imagination stops, and Arthur Clarke said in an interview, “If anyone understands the end of that film, then Stanley and I have failed.” Another of his statements is interesting: “He who will want to make a film that will surpass Odysseus, will have to make it on the spot.”

Love it or hate it, there is no denying that 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the most iconic sci-fi space operas of all time. We can only hope that Dune movies will be able to reach its heights.

Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind (1984)

We find ourselves in a future in a world devastated and impoverished after an apocalyptic war. The story is about a young princess Naushika (Sumi Shimamoto) from the Windy Valley who finds herself in conflict with Tolmekia, a kingdom that with the help of ancient weapons wants to exterminate large insects that live in the jungle. Only Nausikaja can save them.

Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind is very similar to Dune in almost all aspects, except that the main character is a young princess instead of young Duke Paul Atreides, on Arrakis known as Muad’Dib.

Interstellar (2014)

Arrival (2016)

A total of twelve egg-shaped spacecraft landed at various locations around the world. The US military will soon recruit linguist Louise Banks, whose task, with the help of physicist Ian Donnelly, is to discover whether our visitors have come in peace or pose a threat to all of humanity.

The plot of this intelligent sci-fi mystery thriller is focused on the arrival of aliens and our first contact with them. The film is inspired by Ted Chiang’s award-winning SF story “Story of Your Life”.

Even though this movie is set on Earth, in the Dune (1984)not-so-distant future, the story it builds is epic and unbelievable enough to be compared to Dune.

Dune (1984)

In the distant future, a man appears who could be the prophet long-awaited by the entire galaxy. The Duke and his family are sent by the Emperor to a sandy planet from which the gas necessary for space travel is extracted. The move is made to destroy the duke and family, but their son manages to escape and seeks revenge using the unique ecology of the planet as one of the weapons.

Some hate the ‘original’ Dune adaptation, while others love it. It is definitely big in scale, but in terms of book adaptation, it can’t get even close to Villeneuve’s version.

Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy & The Eternals movies

The MCU is the shared universe in which all of the films are set. The films have been in production since 2007, and in that time Marvel Studios has produced and released 26 films, with at least 12 more in various stages of development.

It is the highest-grossing film franchise of all time, having grossed over $23.6 billion at the global box office. This includes Avengers: Endgame, which became the highest-grossing film of all time upon release.

Still, we don’t think all of the MCU movies can compare to Dune in terms of its grandiosity, but Avengers, Guardians of Galaxy, and The Eternals are actually very similar.

Whatever you think about superheroes movies, these movies have to be called epic. They are on a huge scale, have a huge array of amazing heroes and bigger-than-life villains. Even though their tone is nowhere near to the Dune (except maybe in Infinity War and Endgame when there was a lot at stake), world-building, heroes, stories and effects, are definitely en paire.

Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Jupiter Jones was born under the starry night sky and with signs that predicted that she was destined for great deeds. But in reality, now adult Jupiter is an ordinary cleaner. Things change when a genetically modified ex-soldier Cain comes to Earth with the intention of finding her because her genetic record says she is a person who can upset the balance in space.

Grandious, with amazing effect, great actors and amazing production, it really does look like Dune, unfortunately, in terms of quality, they are lightning years apart. Still, this is a sci-fi opera you can give a chance.

Alita: Battle Angel (2019)

The plot of the film is set several centuries into the future, in the Iron City, where the abandoned Alita is found unconscious by a compassionate cyber-doctor Ido who brings her to his clinic. When Alita wakes up, she doesn’t remember who she is, nor does she recognize the world she’s in. But everything is new, every experience is her first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the streets of Iron City, Iro tries to protect her from her mysterious past, while her new friend from the street, Hugo, tries to help her remember her past.

An increasing love affair begins to develop between the two of them, until the deadly forces come for Alita and start disrupting her newly acquired relationship. Then Alita discovers that she has extraordinary fighting skills that she can use to save her loved ones. Determined to discover the truth about her origins, Alita embarks on a path that will lead her to fight the injustices of this dark, corrupt world.

Amazing visual effects, big world building and some great characters make it pretty similar to Dune.

Avatar (2009)

The world of aliens is depicted through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. Regardless of his disability, Jake is a warrior and a fighter. He was recruited and sent to Pandora, a distant planet where corporations extract a rare mineral to solve the energy crisis on Earth.

Since Pandora’s atmosphere is poisonous, the Avatar Program was created by which human consciousness connects to an avatar, a remote-controlled biological body that can survive on Pandora’s deadly air. Avatars are genetically modified hybrids of human DNA and the DNA of Na’vi, a native of Pandora. Born again in his avatar, Jake can walk. Its mission is to infiltrate among the Na’vi who have become a major obstacle to the extraction of precious ore.

But things go the other way when the beautiful Na’vijka Neytiri saves Jake’s life. Jake is accepted by her clan and he, going through many temptations and adventures, slowly gets to know their way of life. As Jake and Neytiri’s relationship deepens, he begins to appreciate the Na’vi and eventually becomes part of them. But soon he will be put to the greatest test and lead them into an epic battle in which the fate of the whole world will be decided.

Just as Dune, Avatar is set on a distant and completely different planet to ours. It is even similar in the story, as we have unlike hero that is, with the help of the native people, able to defend the planet from aggressors. Visually stunning and epic in scale. Also, if we ever live to see its sequels, it could be even bigger than Dune books are.

The Matrix franchise

The Matrix is a sci-fi action trilogy created by Lana and Andy Wachowski. The film series began with The Matrix (1999), followed by two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003). The characters and environment of the film are further elaborated in other media in the same fictional universe, including animation, comics and video games.

The series includes a cyberpunk story that contains references to numerous philosophical and religious ideas. Other influences include mythology, anime, and Hong Kong action movies (especially so-called heroic bloodshed and martial arts movies).

Matrix movies and Dune are probably most similar in terms of its hero. In the begging, they both start as unfit for what is waiting for them, but as movie(s) progress, they become the Chosen One. Again, huge world-building, amazing visual effects and some great characters are also some of the similarities between the two.

Ad Astra (2019)

When a mysterious, potentially deadly event hits Earth, astronaut Roy McBride (Pitt) embarks on a dangerous mission across a relentless solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father (Tommy Lee Jones) and his fatal expedition that now, 30 years later, poses a threat to the entire universe.

It has to be said, Ad Astra is a lot different movie than Dune is. Still, some of its parts, resemble Dune a lot. Roy McBride is often alone and isolated, just like Paul is, he travels through the whole solar system to come to his goal, often even through a lot of something that resembles the sand.

Oblivion (2013)

Jack Harper is one of the last people stationed on the old Earth, destroyed by the long war against extraterrestrial scavengers. His mission of allocating vital resources is coming to an end. He is patrolling the skies, and the discovery of a crashed spaceship with a beautiful alien will trigger a series of events that will make him doubt everything he knows and put the fate of humanity in his hands.

Set in the future, on what looks like a strange distant planet, Oblivion resembles Dune a lot. Even though its characters are nothing alike, as well as the story, visual effects and what is at stake is.

Extinction (2018)

Michaela Peña plays a maintenance worker whose daily, routine life is first interrupted by inexplicable visions and then by a threat that seems like the end of the world.

Just like Paul in Dune, Peter (Michaela Peña) is looking to save his family from the alien invasion. Not so grand as the Dune, but still a very fun and exciting watch.

Star Trek franchise

Star Trek is an American science fiction series created in the ’60s. The creator of Star Trek is producer Gene Roddenberry. Based on the original series from 1966, five more series and eleven films were made, as well as many computer games and books.

The series promotes an idyllic future in which humans and other races, that have reached a stage of development that allows travel at speeds faster than light (so-called warp propulsion), have merged into the United Federation of Planets, an organization similar to the interplanetary United Nations. The plot takes place in the range from the 21st to the 24th century.

Star Trek points to real-life problems such as war, power struggles, imperialism, class differences, human rights violations, racial discrimination, and gender inequality.

Although it has events in its history from real history (e.g. World War II), it also mentions events that did not take place such as the 1997 Eugene Wars (which were obviously not fought). The reason for this is the long history of Star Trek in which the creator Roddenberry predicted some events that did not happen, but also took into account the events that happened before his series was created.

One of the biggest franchises in existence, there are a lot of things it shares in similarities with Dune. If you haven’t watched them before, are not sure where to start with Star Trek, or don’t have time to watch them all, you can start with three movies from Kelvin timeline, they are mostly standalone movies.

The Fifth Element (1997)

Every five thousand years, a door dividing the two dimensions opens. The Fifth Element is a lot like Dune, even though not in the tone of the movie. The Fifth Element is mostly a sci-fi action comedy, unlike Dune. Still, it has unlike heroes, and an amazing and grand story.

John Carter (2012)

The protagonist of the story is war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) who is inexplicably transported to Mars where against his will he becomes embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions between local planets including Tarsus Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and captured Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins).

In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter will find his humanity again after discovering that the fate of Barsoom and his people lies in his hands.

Such an amazing and epic movie, and a pretty good adaptation, even though it has a bit more fantasy than Dune. Unfortunately, it should’ve had sequels, but it didn’t fare well at the box office. John Carter, just like Paul Atreides, finds himself unexpectedly on a deserted planet and has to save the princess and its people from oppressors.

Flash Gordon (1980)

Ming (Max von Sydow), the supreme ruler of the universe, spends his time destroying the planets and the next target is Earth. Soon the entire planet finds itself under the influence of floods, tornadoes and earthquakes that are slowly but surely destroying everything in front of them. Only the eccentric scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol) sees who is behind climate change, but no one believes him.

Coincidentally, Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones) and his beautiful girlfriend Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) break into his lab. Together with them, Dr. Zarkove heads for Ming’s planet. Ming catches Dale’s eye and kidnaps her with the intention of marrying her while Flash tries to unite the warring tribes in a fight against the evil emperor in order to save the Earth.

The Earth is in danger and the only one who can save it is star quarterback Flash Gordon. Space opera at its best, just like Dune.

The Chronicles of Riddick movie franchise

The Chronicles of Riddick is a science fiction action space media franchise created in 2000 by brothers Ken and Jim Wheat and later continued by writer-director David Twohy, spanning three live-action feature films, a direct-to-DVD animated film, two video games for PC and consoles, one motion comic, one mobile game, and two novelizations.

Riddick (voiced or portrayed by Vin Diesel) serves as the titular antihero of the series. Movies follow him in some bigger than life adventures all over the space. In its scale, now it can almost be compared with Dune. Also, looks like Riddick too loves to find himself on desert-like planets full of sand.

If you want a dose full of testosterone in space, you don’t need to look further than Riddick’s stories.

Starship Troopers (1997)

Insects have no houses, technology, weapons or clothing and all they know is attack, fight, kill and reproduce. Mankind has therefore founded Space Marines who fight insects with machine guns that are not particularly effective because it takes a lot of bullets to destroy one insect, and their number is large because they multiply very quickly.

Johnny Rico (C. Van Dien) is in love with schoolmate Carmen Ibanez (D. Richards) who wants to become a spaceship pilot after graduating from high school. Jean Rasczak (M. Ironside), their biology professor, seeks to arouse patriotic feelings in his students. Dizzy Flores (D. Meyer) is in love with Johnny, but he doesn’t notice her. Carl Jenkins (N. P. Harris), Johnny’s best friend, is a talented scientist. After graduation, Johnny, despite the opposition of his parents, reports to the space marines with Carmen and Carla. The three of them make an agreement of eternal friendship.

Carmen is a very skilled pilot and is progressing fast. Carl has been recruited into intelligence, while Johnny is undergoing very harsh training. Dizzy also joined his unit at his own request. Johnny excelled in training and was promoted, but when a soldier was killed through guilt during a drill with real ammunition, Johnny was severely punished. Carmen breaks off the relationship with him because she wants to dedicate herself completely to her career. She is accompanied by Zander Barcalow (P. Muldoon), whom she met at the prom, and who has unhidden sympathies for her.

Disappointed with the events, Johnny decides to leave the Marines and return to his parents’ home. At the moment of his departure, the insects invaded the Earth and war was declared, and since his parents and their entire city were killed in the attack, Johnny decides to stay and fight.

Starship Troopers, an often overlooked space opera gem, has some amazing world building, amazing enemies, space battles, it has it all. It also has a few horrible sequels. Let’s hope Dune won’t be following it in that direction. Also, it has a few sand planets and fights against burrowed aliens.

Total Recall (1990)

Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) finds out that the memory he has is not actually his, but belongs to a memory chip implanted in his brain. Quaid is actually a secret agent, who has become dangerous to his government so she has implanted a chip with a fake memory to make him just one of the citizens leading a normal life.

When he learns of the deception, Quaid travels to Mars to discover his true identity and the person responsible for his embedded memory.

Inspired by the short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by the cult SF writer Philip K. Dick, an exciting action SF thriller directed by the famous Paul Verhoeven was created.

Amazing story and characters, and just like Paul, Douglas finds himself in the role he never wanted.

Ready Player One (2018)

Ready Player One follows the story of teenager Wade who spends his days playing OASIS. Wade has a desire to escape from a gloomy world into a global network of virtual utopia where users lead idyllic alternative lives. When eccentric multibillionaire and game creator James Halliday dies, he leaves his fortune in his will to whoever wins the well-thought-out treasure hunt. Using his avatar, Wade will have to face powerful opponents in the treasure race who will not stop attacking him in the real world.

Wade, just like Paul, becomes the savior everybody needs. But, to become that, he needs to travel all sorts of amazing worlds and some unbelievable characters. Also, the effects and tech in the movie are unbelievable.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)

Valerian and Laureline are special government agents in charge of maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian is planning a romantic relationship with his partner Laureline, however, she will turn him down because of his extensive past with women.

Under the command of the Commander, Valerian and Laureline are sent on a mission to the intergalactic city of Alpha, a growing metropolis made up of a thousand planets. Alpha has seventeen million residents who have pooled their talents, technology and resources for the benefit of all. However, not everyone on Alpha has the same interests and goals; invisible forces will put the whole city in great danger.

Grand in scale such as Dune, has some amazing special effects, some very interesting characters, but unfortunately, not quite there as Dune. Still, it can be a fun watch.

Serenity (2005) & Firefly

In the 26th century, the military organization Alliance colonized the galaxy. The rebels, better known as the Independents, resisted totalitarian military rule. After a brutal civil war, the rebels were defeated, and the survivors fled across the galaxy, so that they would not be punished like their comrades.

Another group of apostates, the fear and trembling of the galaxy – the Reavers – are wandering in space. Known for their cruelty, the Reavers massacre their enemies and eat them while they die in terrible torment. Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), who fought on the side of the Independents in the Civil War, is the leader of the cargo spacecraft “Serenity.”

Along with his crew made up of his first officer to fight him on the rebel side, Zoe (Gina Torres), her husband Wash (Alan Tudyk), mechanic Kaylee (Jewel Staite), mercenary Jayne (Adam Baldwin), Inara (Morena Baccarin), an educated “companion” who provides sexual services to clients around the world, and a priest Book (Ron Glass), Mal, and Serenity roam the galaxy in search of lucrative jobs, often illegal in nature, such as smuggling and reselling various valuable cargo to whoever announces the offer.

Things get even more complicated when Simon (Sean Maher) and his sister River Tam (Summer Glau), who has supernatural abilities, arrive on the ship. Before her brother released her, River was a prisoner of the Alliance, which does not give up its intention to bring her back under its wing.

Serenity was an amazing end to one of the best sci-fi TV shows of all time, Firefly. Firefly and Serentiy after it, were full of amazing stories and great characters. Just as Dune has its amazing world building and character development, so did before it Firefly and Serenity.

Ender’s Game (2013)

The film follows the extremely gifted boy Ender. He will be selected for elite military training to save the world destroyed in the war against aliens. Namely, only the way children think and react can save humanity.

One of the most popular and award-winning SF novels of all time “Ender’s Game” is finally coming to the big screens. The director is Gavin Hood while young Hollywood star Asa Butterfield appears in the lead role.

Ender’s Game should’ve been exactly what Dune now is now. It should’ve been a great adaptation of one of the best and most popular SF novels of all time. It should’ve also had multiple sequels (something we expect to see from Dune as well). Just as Dune, it has a boy savior, and, again like Dune, it chooses a rising star for the role. Unfortunately, even though the movie is not that bad, critics didn’t like it, the audience didn’t like it enough to go to cinemas, and one possibly great SF movie franchise quickly fall in the water.

Foundation (TV Series 2021– )

Foundation tells the story of a group of exiles who are on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization in the midst of the collapse of the Galactic Empire.

Attempts to adapt The Foundation began decades ago, even Roland Emmerich and Jonathan Nolan were at some point tied to the project, but so far simply no one has been able to devise a true adaptation of Asim’s works. Now, the executive producer Davida S. Goyer and Apple TV+ have finally found a way to make it happen.

Even though this is not a movie, we wanted to suggest you this TV show as a bonus. The Foundation books are probably even bigger in scale than Dune books are, and if the TV show lasts, they will make one of the biggest space operas ever on TV.
