There are a lot of different Sith Lords in the history of Star Wars, and most of them lived during the time of the Old Republic, as their stories were told in the Legends part of Star Wars in the video game called Star Wars: The Old Republic. Arguably the most badass Sith Lord during the Old Republic was Darth Malgus, one of the most terrifying users of the Force to ever exist due to his immense hatred and extremely intimidating appearance. But how did Darth Malgus even die, and who killed him?

Darth Malgus’ fate is still unknown as of this writing because his story was never concluded in the Old Republic video game. As such, no one knows who killed Malgus or how he died, as his story has no definite conclusion. But it is possible that he was killed in battle due to his nature as a battle-hungry Sith Lord.

It is almost without a doubt that Darth Malgus is one of the most popular Sith Lords in Star Wars: The Old Republic, as his power allowed him to rise up as one of the most prominent villains in the storyline. But the thing is that there is yet to be any definite ending to his storyline, and that means that his fate is still unknown. Now, let’s look at what happened to Darth Malgus.

Darth Malgus’ Fate Explained

Star Wars: The Old Republic has one of the largest rosters of Sith Lords on the Legends side of Star Wars. But while there were Sith Lords more powerful than him, Darth Malgus was arguably the most popular out of all of the Sith Lords in the Old Republic because he was basically the rage-infused Darth Vader of his era.

Malgus was born in 3700 BBY, and that means that he existed centuries before the time of Revan and Malak. Of course, he was born almost 4,000 years before Darth Vader rose up to become the enforcer of the Empire.

Born as Veradun, Malgus had an uncanny connection with the dark side of the Force and was someone whose anger was used as fuel for his power. His connection with the dark side was established quite early when he killed one of his father’s slaves out of anger. And he was praised for what he did because he lived on Dromund Kaas, which was a Sith-controlled planet that respected power over anything else.

Because of his power, Veradun was sent to the Sith Academy to train in the dark side of the Force. He became Darth Vindican’s apprentice, a powerful master in his own right. Together, Malgus and Vindican went through a lot of difficult trials. But after a Jedi injured Vindican during one of their battles with the Jedi Order, Malgus killed his master because he perceived him as being too weak.

However, during one of the battles with the Jedi on Alderaan, Darth Malgus was injured. A prominent Republic Commander, Jace Malcolm tackled Malgus while holding a grenade. The grenade explosion wounded Malgus’ face, as a powerful Jedi named Satele Shan used the Force to push him onto a cliff face, causing the entire cliff to fall on him.

While Malgus survived that encounter, he got badly injured as he needed to wear a respirator his entire life. But that only turned him into an angrier and more powerful version of himself as he became known for his brutality as a Sith Lord.

Since then, Darth Malgus became one of the most important pieces of the Sith Empire in its battles with the Jedi Order and the Republic. He was a key player during a mission involving a small strike team of Sith warriors that stormed Coruscant and destroyed the Jedi Temple. Malgus led that team and destroyed the Jedi Temple while killing a few Jedi Masters.

This attack was set up while the Sith and the Jedi discussed a peace treaty. During that battle, Malgus killed Van Zallow, one of the best in the Jedi then. As such, killing one of the strongest Jedi of that era allowed Malgus to rise up as one of his era’s most powerful Sith Lords.

Nevertheless, the Sith Empire and the Republic finally agreed to a real peace treaty. Nevertheless, Malgus never supported the stance of the Sith Empire in agreeing to peaceful terms with the Jedi and the Republic. As such, he became one of the biggest critics of the Sith Empire.

Malgus, out of rage and hoping to become more powerful than ever, killed his own lover as he thought that his love for her was a weakness he needed to shed. And he used his relationship with her to fuel his rage so that he could become more powerful than ever.

Eventually, Malgus separated from the Sith Empire due to his disagreements with the other Sith Lords. He sought to create his own Empire, but he failed when the Jedi and the Sith joined forces to defeat him on the planet Ilum. However, he was presumed dead but managed to survive. Empress Arcina used him as one of the people she relied on to maintain her power.

During the time of the rise of the Outlander as the Alliance Commander, the hero defeated Darth Malgus. He imprisoned him in a special prison that was designed to contain his incredible power. The Alliance Commander visited him in his prison to talk about Darth Nul. This was the last time Malgus was seen in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Is Darth Malgus Still Alive?

The thing about the storyline of the Old Republic is that it doesn’t have a definite ending in terms of Darth Malgus’ fate. There was never a point in the storyline wherein Malgus was killed, which means that he is still alive as far as the video game events are concerned. As mentioned, he was last seen imprisoned.

But when it comes to the current Star Wars timeline events, we can safely say that he is already dead, even if he were to become a canon character. That’s because he lived around 3,700 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. As such, he would have died at one point in his life because there would be no way he survived for 37 centuries without anyone detecting him.

Still, what we know about Star Wars is that anything is possible. In Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a Jedi from the High Republic era was still alive after spending hundreds of years in a Bacta tank. Of course, a few hundred years pale in comparison to 3,700 years. As such, while someone might have frozen Malgus to preserve him, it is unlikely that he would have survived that long, regardless of what kind of technology was used to preserve his body.

How Does Darth Malgus Die?

As mentioned, we last saw Darth Malgus imprisoned after the Alliance Commander defeated him. But we don’t know what happened to him because his story wasn’t continued. That is why we don’t know how Darth Malgus died despite how we believe he died somewhere between the events of the Old Republic and the Skywalker Saga.

We know that Malgus is a battle-hardened warrior that is always hungry for a fight. That is why he was one of the Sith Lords that the Empire relied on, as he was always looking to dive headfirst into a battle. As such, there’s a good chance that Darth Malgus died as a proud warrior instead of dying of old age in a prison cell. But we are merely speculating because we don’t know Malgus’ fate.
