Baki Hanma

Baki profile

The protagonist of the entire series, from the age of three, trained in martial arts under various masters for ten years. He then decides to take his training to the next level by teaming up with his father Yūjirō. However, he is disappointed by his extreme violence and is almost killed by him. Only the sacrifice of his mother saves his life. His death, therefore, leads him to train to become the strongest fighter in the world and defeat his father. During the Death Row Saga, he is poisoned by Yanagi but manages to heal while participating in the Raitai tournament.

Yūjirō Hanma

Yujiro profile

The father of Baki and Jack, he is also known by the name of Ogre and as “the strongest creature on earth”. He is known to master any known style of fighting and martial arts though he prefers to use brute force. Yūjirō is a tall, powerful man with long red hair and seems to age very slowly. He is extremely strong to the point of blocking an earthquake with one punch.

He fought on the battlefields unarmed at sixteen, during the Vietnam War, challenging both Americans and Viet Cong. During the war, he met the soldier Diane Neil with whom he had a son named Jack.

He has proven capable of defeating an army of armed men with his bare hands and withstanding bullets and heavy weapons. After the war, he was respected by the United States, so much so that they considered him a national power in his own right; if all future American presidents would take him into consideration, in return, Yūjirō would work for them as a mercenary. Yūjirō claims to have, in addition to Baki and Jack, several other children scattered around the world, and according to him, they will look for him to challenge him.

Jack Hanma

Jack profile

Son of Yūjirō and soldier Diane Nail, and the older half-brother of Baki. Yūjirō raped his mother in revenge as she tried to lure him into a trap to have him killed by the US Army. Getting pregnant after the assault, Diane gave birth to Jack and never denied him, instead considering him as redemption for her sins. As Jack grew older, he eventually learned of his father and brother’s existence and began training to rival them. The workouts he underwent were so intense as to lead him to compromise his physique.

Considering himself still too weak, Jack was found by a scientist whom he asked, after seeing his father defeat a polar bear ten times his size, to help him create a superhuman being capable of overcoming it. The scientist helped him, unaware that Jack was Yūjirō’s son. His main technique is his bite: he uses it when facing very strong opponents; in other words, Jack bites his opponents in a fight causing serious injuries to their limbs, so they cannot continue the fight. Jack’s bite is so strong that he can easily bite open a coconut and chew the bones. He loses part of his jaw after a brutal fight with Pickle. He engages in a series of fights with Sikorsky and also fights with Mohammed Ali Jr. winning both fights.

Doppo Orochi

Doppo profile

A very strong elderly fighter, he is a black belt in karate and head of the Shinshinkai school. He has trained in martial arts for fifty years. In the first series, he challenges Yūjirō to stand up to him but ends up losing an eye. In the second part, he fights in the tournament together with his son Katsumi, a young promise of the same art as his father.

During the duels, in the third round, he defeated Goki Shibukawa and Amanai Yu. During the Death Row Saga, Dorian manages to cut off his left hand, but Doppo manages to have it reattached, defeating Dorian afterward. However, Dorian manages to take his revenge by breaking into Doppo’s house and defacing him with an explosive. He is the protagonist of the spin-off manga Baki Gaiden: Kenjin.

During the saga of the condemned to death, he is wounded in the throat by Dorian, taking revenge a few days later by setting him on fire. He later manages to defeat Doyle, and the two become friends.

Mitsunari Tokugawa

Mitsunari profile

He’s an old man who runs the arena matches under the Tokyo Dome, where fighters from all over the world can compete without any rules. He has a great knowledge of martial arts even though he doesn’t fight often and of the fighters themselves, including birthdays and family members.

He is a friend of Doppo Orochi and Antonio Igari. A close acquaintance of Yūjirō, he was one of the few who managed to knock him out. Tokugawa usually prefers to leave fights as they are, but it can happen that he can change the rules if this means amplifying the action, even threatening a doctor with a knife while he was trying to interrupt a fight.

Kaoru Hanayama

Hanayama2 profile

A boy who is also the strongest local Yakuza. When his father died, he was adopted by his uncle, who saw his great potential. Although he is gigantic, he is actually very young. He fights with brute force, and his grip is so strong that he can blow off his arm and cut off blood flow.

Defeated by Baki, he enters the tournament in the second series, easily defeating Katsumi Orochi. Kaoru is the protagonist of two spin-off manga. During the saga of the condemned to death, he collides with the outlaw Spec and defeats him but ends up with a disfigured face.

Amanai

Amanai profile

A genetically engineered soldier. He was supposed to defeat Yūjirō but became his student after he kidnapped the president of the United States. His technique is based on calm, as opposed to that of Yūjirō’s anger. In fact, Yu despises Yūjirō for his way of inflicting violence on the defeated, to the point of hitting him without fear, accusing him of the little respect he has for the weakest.

Kozue Matsumoto

Kozue profile

Baki Hanma’s classmate, the two fall in love over time until they get together. She initially doesn’t know of Baki’s real identity and the violent world of fighters where he lives; after finding out, she still chooses to stay close to Baki, as she knows her destiny is that of a fighter.

Despite appearances, Kozue possesses a strong will and spirit like those of Baki and his fighting friends, not feeling fear towards them: in fact, she is not afraid to say what she thinks, even kicking Hanayama full of contempt for how he judged the women of little account, intimidating him with words. Her strength and temper in the world of fighting have led many wrestlers to respect her, impressed by her fortitude.

He is known to have defeated, before Yūjirō, the Americans on the small island of Okinawa during World War II, killing two thousand American soldiers and the commander using a single technique.

The entire US Navy fleet, hearing of his fame, bombarded the island to kill him, but they only succeeded in reducing the island to rubble, while Yūichiro escaped unharmed. He appears during the fight between Baki and Yūjirō, making fun of the latter because he can’t defeat a child. He considers his son a very problematic child.
