What Does Chewbacca Say in the Movies? Here’s What We Think!

Chewbacca has always been one of the most lovable characters in Star Wars. Actually, being based on George Lucas’s real-life dog, there was never a more loyal character in all of Star Wars than the famous Wookie. We all know the Wookie’s iconic roar but have absolutely no clue what he’s saying. When writing the script George Lucas had lines written for Chewbacca so that Peter Mayhew knew how to react, but audiences never got a chance to see these lines and had to interpret them for themselves. Here’s what we think Chewbacca was saying in the Star Wars movies! 

‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope’

Han Solo running at the Stormtroopers 

When escaping from the Death Star, there is a point where Han Solo is running down the hall. In the end, he sees a big group of stormtroopers, screams, and runs back. Chewbacca is running not too far behind him, and when he sees all the blaster fire, he doesn’t get concerned but does let out a roar. Now we all know how loyal Chewie is, and if he felt Han was in danger, he would run after him with no questions asked. 

It’s easy to assume that Chewie is used to Han Solo getting himself in these situations and has complete confidence in him getting out, but that’s not to say he isn’t getting tired of it. It’s easy to assume that Chewbacca simply said, ‘Not again, Han’ or even something like ‘This guy is gonna get me killed one day.’ No matter what he said, we all know Chewie will always stick by Han Solo no matter how dangerous situations they get into. 

Throne room medals 

At the end of ‘A New Hope, ’ the Death Star is blown up, and the rebels have managed to get a win against the Empire. Both Luke Skywalker and Han Solo receive medals for saving Princess Leia and aiding in the battle. The heroic music is swelling up, and everyone is happy about the situation. Notably, however, one character did not receive a medal. Chewbacca was there on the Death Star and was in The Millenium Falcon when Han Solo shot Vader’s ship but did not get the recognition himself. 

At the end of the scene, all the characters look at the camera, and Chewbacca screams his iconic roar. Now this can be interpreted in two ways. He could either be praising his friends, or he could simply be saying, ‘Where’s my medal? I was there too!’. It’s easy to imagine anyone in that situation being annoyed at not getting the praise they deserve. Still, Chewbacca is too nice and too loyal that he probably is just celebrating his friends, but it is funny to think about him being annoyed at not receiving a medal like Luke and Han.

‘Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back’

Arrival on Bespin

When Han, Chewie, and Leia flee the Empire, they escape to Cloud City on Bespin hoping that Han’s old friend, Lando Calrissian, can help them. As soon as they land their ship, Lando is there to meet them, and his first reaction is to try to charm Princess Leia. As much as Han Solo tried to hide it, he genuinely felt for Leia. We knew it, and no doubt his best friend Chewbacca knew as well.

The entire time Lando makes moves on Leia, Chewbacca is standing in the background in complete silence. We all know he is judging, and as soon as they walk off, he lets off just a small roar. Now this can be interpreted in a couple of ways. Chewie could simply be reminding Lando that Wookiees have the strength to rip arms off, or he could easily be saying to himself, ‘Who does this guy think he is.’ Either way, Lando is too captivated by Leia to even hear or acknowledge the Wookie. Probably for his own good, to be honest.

Lando’s betrayal

Later in the film, we find out that Darth Vader has blackmailed Lando and then betrays his friends to free Cloud City. The entire time during this scene, Chewbacca has a look on his face like he knows Lando isn’t to be trusted. After Han Solo scolds Lando, it seems as if Chewie joins in.  He probably said something snarky like ‘I knew this guy couldn’t be trusted’ or just even outright called him a Star Wars version of a swear word. We know that Chewie did not trust Lando from the start.

Han and Chewie are reunited

Probably one of the most wholesome moments with the character, Chewbacca finally sees his best friend again after a whole year. As soon as he sees him, he screams joyfully and hugs him. While it could just be Chewie roaring with happiness, he likely spoke to Han. He was filling in Han on Luke being a Jedi and everything that’s happened. It’s also nice to assume that when he first saw Han, he simply just said, ‘Han, your back!’  As basic as it is, it’s just nice to think that Chewie would have had a burst of emotion when he sees his friend again and is excited about his return.

Chewie and Ewoks in the Scout Transport

Later during the Battle of Endor, Chewie, and the Ewoks operate a Scout Transport vehicle. It’s funny to see Chewie have some furry friends as he’s spent the entire trilogy with humans, so it seems as if he has taken a parental role to the Ewoks and shown them what to do.

It’s funny to think of him as a parent teaching their child to drive when they are gunning down the stormtroopers, saying things like ‘Not that button, press that one, stop being so stupid!’.

It’s good to see Chewbacca meeting a species like his, and it also adds some good comedy relief near the end of the film.
